Sunday, April 27, 2008 @ 10amCelebrating the Earth "To see the earth as it truly is, small and blue and beautiful in that eternal silence where it floats, is to see ourselves as riders on the earth together, brothers on that bright loveliness in the eternal cold." So wrote poet Archibald MacLeish in 1968 upon seeing an Apollo picture taken from the moon. In the 40 years since then, we've come to appreciate how fragile our small, blue planet is, but we're still not taking the best care of it. "We need to remember our interdependence with the earth. This planet is our physical and spiritual home, and the more we can do to sustain it, the more it will do to sustain us," says Reverend Terry Keenan, senior minister at the Santa Anita Church. Creating positive global change takes spiritual as well as physical effort, so the church is staging a celebration of the earth on Sunday, April 27, at 10:00 a.m.
The hour of music, dramatic readings, poetry, and earth-healing meditation is "a dramatic program unfolding in five parts, from the creation of the earth to a hope-filled and uplifting vision of what can be-a renewed connection between humans and Nature," says organizer Maggie Bryant. Besides furnishing the opportunity to harmonize your spirit with the spirit of the earth, participants will be given simple inner and outer actions families and individuals can take to contribute to the re-greening of the planet, including a list of Web resources. Sunrise Comes at 10 O'Clock on Easter
The sermon, "Paths, Avenues, and Bridges," will be given by Nadia Bradley, author of Origins of Truth. Bradley, an American Palestinian, was born to a devout Muslim family in Chicago, Illinois in 1962. She was in a loveless arranged marriage and found herself writing to God out of despair. She says, "I would not write of all the things I did not like in life; I wrote of all I loved." As time passed, Bradley's despair deepened until only the love of her children sustained her. It was around this time that her writing changed. Passages that she had no memory of writing contained valuable life lessons that she had somehow channeled from another entity onto the page. These gave her the strength she needed to seek a divorce and begin her life anew, on her own two feet.

Pancakes with Butter and Sermon
It's the next best thing to breakfast in bed. Come to The Santa Anita Church's pancake breakfast at 10:00 a.m. and hear the children of the Barnhart School Chorus sing. Then, as a warm feeling of fullness steals over you, you can attend the church service without even leaving your seat. Afterwards, stick around and sing carols! (Sorry, you will have to get on your feet at that point.) And while you're up, choose a paper angel. Each angel bears the first name of a local needy child, his or her age and clothing size, and a short wish list of toys, books, games, or clothing. Tape the angel to your unwrapped gift(s)-a minimum value of $15.00, please-and return them to the church office by Sunday, December 9, and the Foothill Unity Center will get them to the children in time for Christmas.

The good folks at The Santa Anita Church are there to help with their annual Holiday Boutique, which this year will be on Saturday, November 17 and Sunday, November 18 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Local crafters will have all kinds of marvelous gifts for sale, and bring your sweet tooth-there will be baked goods and candy as well! (It's best to buy a double helping of the latter, in order to avoid consuming all your Christmas purchases on the way home.)
